3-3-2021: Course Update & Report

To create the best race day experience possible, the 2021 Leprechaun Chase will be modified to the contingency 8K course. Due to significant snow this winter, recent rapid melt-off, and persistent snow and ice in shady areas, the cross-country portion of the original 10K course will be too muddy and and in places too snowy or icy to run this year.

The great news is that new course will be mostly on paved surfaces with a short section on dry crushed limestone and a very short 800 foot cross-country finale to the finish line. We want to thank our partners at Papillion Parks and Recreation for all of the help getting the course ready for race day.

All other race details are unchanged including parking at Papillion South High School, Start and Finish line locations at SumTur Amphitheater, and the wave start format and times. The ladies head start for the chase format will be adjusted from 5 minutes and 30 seconds to 4 minutes and 24 seconds.

Event Transfer Deadline: The transfer to virtual event deadline has been extended to Thursday, March 4th at 11:59 PM.

The Race Guide is up to date and has all the key information you will need for a successful race week.

Good Luck!

2-1-2021: New Course for 2021

For the first time in 10 years, the Leprechaun Chase will have a venue change and new course! For the 2021 edition of this storied race, runners will start and finish from SumTur Amphitheater in Papillion, Nebraska and take on a scenic course around Walnut Creek Lake.

Due to current Nebraska State Park COVID regulations, Leprechaun Chase was not be able to run through Mahoney State Park. We look forward to returning to Mahoney State Park and Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum in 2022. In the meantime, we are in luck and are extremely excited to be able to hold an in-person event on another amazing and scenic course within Sarpy County.

Start Time: 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM | Wave Starts

Event Transfer Deadline: The transfer to virtual event deadline has been extended to Thursday, March 4th at 11:59 PM.

Wave Starts: In order to spread out runners and reduce density, the race format has been altered to wave starts.  Waves start at 8:00 AM and go until 8:50 AM. More specific information about waves and your assignment will be outlined in the Race Guide and future email communications.

Parking: Parking will be Papillion South High School (just north of start/finish)

Start/Finish: Start/Finish at Sumtur Amphitheater

Course: The Leprechaun Chase is known for being one of the finest 10K courses in Nebraska. Although the course has changed for 2021, the new course has many of the same features.

Starting at SumTur Amphitheater, the course runs through Walnut Creek Recreation Area.  This course has it all; from scenic views, to flat pavement, to a rolling cross country section. (See Course Map)

Separate Start & Finish Line: The start and finish line will be in separate areas of SumTur parking lot, because runners will be starting and finishing at the same time. The Start Line is on the far south side of the parking lot. The Finish Line is on the north side of parking lot adjacent to SumTur Amphitheater (See Start/Finish Map)

Post Race Celebration: Based upon current restrictions, the normal Green Beer After Party experience has been altered. Instead of the normal finish line party, all in-person runners will receive finish line snacks and refreshments as well as a finisher pint glass and a beer coupon to redeem off site. Virtual runners will receive the can cooler and redeemable beer coupon.

What if local health directives impact an event on the scheduled date?

Our goal will be to first alter the event to fit within the local health directives and still provide runners with the high quality experience they have come to expect from Pink Gorilla Events. This might mean having multiple wave starts, extending the event to over an entire weekend, or modifying the route. If this is not possible, we will explore moving the race date to later in the year.

If event alterations or postponement are not possible, all registered in-person participants will take part in the virtual event. They will receive participant materials for the current year’s virtual event including any optionally selected paid add-ons which will be shipped to them for free. They will also receive a 25% discount for the in-person event of the same race for the following year or a discount of $10.00 should the participant choose to register for the following year’s BRIN Series.
